Mentors
Our chief want in life is somebody who will make us do what we can. —Ralph Waldo Emerson
It’s been a while since my previous post on my journey through music composition. I found appropiate to take the time to thank each person that contributed in different aspects of shaping my technique, improving my sense of discipline, creating melodic ideas and expanding my theoretical understanding of music. After all, we are nothing but the average of the people we surround ourselves with.
With their own particular style and outstanding talent, I feel utterly proud to say, here are my guitar mentors over the years:
- Pepe Vascones: he introduced me to the guitar world at school.
- Tony Mauri: if it was not for Tony, I would not be self-critic with my own playing. He showed me, in his own genius way, how to push myself towards excellence and self-learning.
- Eliza Carrington with her amazing vibe and incredible talent for composition, she taught me so many things on how to arrange a song, record and put together my musical ideas into songs.
- Leticia Filizzola if I was able to play the guitar solos I dreamed about as a kid, it was due to the technical advices from Leticia. She constantly pushed me to develop myself by trying new solos and encouraged me to work on my own stuff.
- Anika Mladineo gave me ideas to improvise on different scales and expand my range of chords. Her profound knowledge of harmony was really helpful for analyzing guitar solos and deeply analyze them.
- Trevor Wong although I only had a couple of lessons with him, I learned a lot from his approach to connect chords and generate riffs in math rock.
- Luis Kalil after hearing his epic song Insight I got interested in his style and decided to take lessons with him. From the very first lessons, I had to re-learn how to do the vibratto and to pay attention to every minor detail of playing.
What is the result so far?
Almost enough songs for an album :D Still a lot of room for improvement, though. Getting there.
I would like to tell them all, with a great sense of responsibililty, I will not dissapoint you!
